Stranger 106 - Millie - a photo on Flickriver

When you someone as stylish as Millie you just have to ask her for a portrait. It seems like I am not the first since apparently she has asked about 5 times in the last 2 months. Millie was awesome though and very kindly agreed to a portrait.

This is part of one of the concepts that I wanted to take forward into the second round of portraits. To embrace more of the journalistic side but to keep it interesting I wanted to start a question chain. The principle is that my current stranger will ask the question that I need to ask the next. As this was the first I started of with a question.

I originally had a whole lot of questions that I had created to start of with some lighthearted and some deeper. I went for something in between on this one and asked her what is the best thing that as ever happened to her.

She was very quick to answer that it was meeting her partner some 8 years ago. I asked what what she loved about him and she mentioned that not only is he really intelligent and very good looking (in fact she said that he is better looking than her) but also very humble.

It was great to see that she has found someone amazing. Millie herself was just on her way to get her eyebrows done and is not working currently. She use to work for Habitat (a furniture/homeware company) and what she loved about working their was sourcing new products/materials. She lives near Pimlico which apparently is an awesome place to do that.

I asked her what question she would like me to ask my next stranger. Firstly I she said to ask whether the often get stopped and asked for pictures. This was when I found that she had been asked for pictures a few times before. She was surprised that she was asked so many times as she says she is shy person and get called tennis ball head by her siblings (she is the eldest of 5). I said I wasn't surprised because she is very stylish ans she attributed this to her parents.

The question was going to be hit or miss and didn't really give an option for me to delve further so I asked her for another question.

So my question for the next stranger is going to be:

"Tell me about the best thing that has happened so far today"

In terms of the picture itself there were a few things I struggled with on this. Firstly exposure was difficult due to the extremes of the white wall against her skin tone. I was spot metering on her skin and underexposing slightly but this was making it too dark and so I went the other way. I figured that as long as I wasn't clipping highlights I would be ok.

I also wish that I went for a slightly narrower depth of field although its by no means a deal breaker.

Finally the light was tricky because it was very sunny. I got her into shade but I wanted to get some directional light by using the reflector. Although I kind of got what I wanted, I had to tweak it in post.
