Nowadays you're talking 'bout symmetrical, asymmetrical and dissymmetrical warfare and I think if Switzerland ever has to fight a war again, it's going to be one of the last. Either it's going to be some sort of terroristic threat, posed by non-government groups (I don't know if this is a politically correct term ...) - or it's going to be a war against a superior power.

So maybe it's not such a bad idea that we're still training for the guerillan warfare, the fight in the Alps, the fight against snow, glaciers, mountains, avalanches. Already in World War II the Alps were called the "Réduit", the last resort. Everything would have been concetrated on the Alps to fight a Guerillan Warfare against the Third Reich, knowing the mountains, the country better than the enemies.

This was kept up for a long time during the Cold War till about a decade ago. We still had our infantry, primarily training the war in the snow when it slowly began its transformation to a modern, a so-called mechanised infantry.

What's left is not a lot. We still have a small number of specialists who no longer train the war in the Alps, but keep the knowledge of fighting it. The rest is mostly gone. This two-day training of how to move on glacier, how to climb ice walls, etc. was also just an idea of our colonel for our promotion to "Private First Class". For a lot of aspirants this was a first timer. So maybe it really wasn't such a bad idea after all ...
