Sporophyte Dance - a photo on Flickriver

Sporophyte Dance

This was my third submission for the photo contest. The judges liked it enough to put it into their "almost a winner" presentation ahead of the awards. Their criticism was that it could have benefited from a better crop. For comparison, the original that I cropped this from is the next picture in the photostream. And yes, I admit I flipped it into a mirror image of the original - I thought the setae going up from the bottom left corner compositionally made a better line leading into the picture than having them lead out of the picture on the bottom right. I was going for a somewhat triangular composition with the red setae going up and the spore capsules pointing down, but I guess the capsule in focus ended up being a bit too central in the image. I also tried a shot in landscape orientation.
