Magnolia is a large genus of about 210 flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.
Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees did, the flowers evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. To avoid damage from pollinating beetles, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are extremely tough. Fossilised specimens of Magnolia acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae dating to 95 million years ago. Another primitive aspect of Magnolias is their lack of distinct sepals or petals: Magnolias possess undifferentiated flower parts for which the term "tepals" was coined.

Magnolia er en slekt av om lag 210 arter trær, som kjennetegnes av tildels tidlige, velduftende blomster. Trærne tilhører underfamilien Magnolioideae under familien Magnoliaceae. Det naturlige habitatet er Nord-Amerika, Sør-Amerika og sørlige og østlige Asia.
Magnolia er eldgamle arter, minst 95 millioner år gamle, og utviklet seg før biene kom. Pollineringen er derfor utviklet til å skje via biller. Et annet arkaisk trekk er at blomsten ikke har separate kronblad (petal) og dekkblad (sepal) – den har i stedet noe som har fått navnet tepal. Magnolia er føde for bjørnespinneren Hypercompe scribonia.
Treet har sitt navn etter den franske biotanikeren Pierre Magnol. ofte brukes feilaktig navnet tulipantre. (Kilde: Wikipedia)
