Cape Buffalo - Widow maker - a photo on Flickriver

            Aggressive and resilient, the Cape Buffalo has been dubbed the "widow maker" by African hunters and is debatably responsible for the most hunting deaths in Africa on average. They have the reputation of being dangerous when cornered or injured. There are many tales told by big game hunters of injured buffalo turning back and goring or killing the shooter.
Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) are extremely social herd animals and gather in thousands in the right grazing conditions. They will exhibit activity through the entire day but with resting periods of low activity in the early morning and late afternoon.
The nickname for an old Cape Buffalo bull is a “dagga boy”. Dagga is the mixture of sand, water and cement used in building in rural Africa. Cape Buffalo like to wallow in the mud to cool down and rid themselves of ticks. The dried mud on their skin looks like dagga.
