Nagasaki Car 1054 - built 1952 - see below

This tram was built for the Japanese city of Sendai, a major industrial centre located some 350km north of Tokyo, where its number was 121. As originally constructed it was a saloon car with doors at each end. In 1969 it was substantially rebuilt for one person operation, including repositioning the rear door on each side to the centre. The Sendai tramway system, which had a track gauge of 1067mm, was replaced by a metro between 1969 and 1976 and on final closure five trams including the car now at the Museum were sold to Nagasaki. On arrival in that city, they were regauged to standard (1435mm) gauge.
In 1992 the tram was donated for preservation in Australia, freshly repainted and in full operational condition. It is unusual in having single-motor equal-wheel bogies, in contrast to the common practice whereby trams with only one motor per bogie have the driven wheels larger than the others - the "maximum traction" design.
