Homeless Encampment Milwaukee Wisconsin 8-30-19_2537

            Seen underneath the expressway overpass at 6th Street and Clybourn. 

A couple of blocks to the south was the Harley Davidson Bike Rally. Those bikes are very expensive. The Milwaukee River is a stone's throw away. A sculling team was hard at work on the water. An endless stream of rush hour traffic flowed along the expressway overhead. A couple of miles to the west is Miller Park home to the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team. No shortage of money there , not that the players are to blame for the homeless camp. And then there is nearby downtown business district and wealthy Marquette University. A stunning and shocking display to see this large camp of indigent people living in tents not far away from tremendous affluence and abundance. 

I was told by one of the residents that Marquette might help them get indoors at a property the university owns nearby, but that nothing was certain about that arrangement as of yet. I was also told that the city doesn't hassle the residents as long as they clean up after themselves. The area I saw did look reasonably clean except for the big load of garbage facing 6th Street. Staying warm when it gets cold? The bigger the tent the better. You freeze your butt off in a small tent. 

And the Harleys roared by, almost drowning out the conversation I was having with the resident. No photos of any resident this time. A project for the future. Part of that project will be learning something of their individual stories. That's assuming they want to talk. 

In the meantime, I can't stop thinking about what I saw. We need better paying jobs and more affordable housing in this country. Greed and gentrification are forcing more and people out onto the streets.
