Black Woodpecker (m) - a photo on Flickriver

            a Lifer seen on Thursday in the same forest as the Northern Goshawk juvenile posted on Friday. 
I had heard the loud and peculiar call of this rare woodpecker a few times in different local  forests but had never been able to spot it. 

By far Europe's largest woodpecker  it lives in old  forests where a pair occupies a large territory.

Its relative, the White-bellied Woodpecker of Asia,   is slightly larger ( up to 48 cm ) than the Black. I have seen this one in Kabini/Nagarhole NP in India. 
On the English Wikipedia page of the White-bellied it is stated that it is the world's largest living woodpecker.  That is not true as in the extreme north of India one finds the Great Slaty Woodpecker, that measures 51 cm. I have seen that one in Dudhwa NP and it is a real giant
