Cattail at Sunrise

            Swaths of late-season cattail (Typha latifolia) stand awash in morning sunrise light with their roots anchored in the cool, muddy shallows of Coot Lake, Boulder, Colorado.

The cattail plant is edible from its roots to its shoots to its green seed heads. What can't be eaten was once ingeniously adapted to a host of uses. The dried seed heads may stay dry on the inside even during a persistent rain, and so were a ready source of tinder in even very wet conditions. Soaked in oil, these same dried seed heads might light up like a torch. The fluffy down-like seeds themselves are also highly absorbent and insulating, and were thus pressed into service as diaper liners and clothing insulation. The mature leaves are very tough and also buoyant to a degree. This means they can be crafted into shallow boats, rafts, sandals, mats, and so on. Clearly, it was (and is?) a worthwhile endeavor to pay close attention to the gifts growing around one's community.

Getting ready for a trip to the Beartooth Wilderness next week. Not sure what to expect weather-wise, but night-time temps are looking a bit on the chilly side...
