Mittagszauber
Im Garten wandelt hohe Mittagszeit,
der Rasen glänzt, die Wipfel schatten breit;
von oben sieht, getaucht in Sonnenschein
und leuchtend Blau, der alte Dom herein.

Am Birnbaum sitzt mein Töchterlein im Gras;
die Märchen liest sie, die als Kind ich las;
ihr Antlitz glüht, es ziehn durch ihren Sinn
Schneewittchen, Däumling, Schlangenkönigin. 

Kein Laut von außen stört; 's ist Feiertag -
nur dann und wann vom Turm ein Glockenschlag!
Nur dann und wann der mattgedämpfte Schall
im hohen Gras von eines Apfels Fall!

Da kommt auf mich ein Dämmern wunderbar,
gleich wie im Traum verschmilzt, was ist und war:
die Seele löst sich und verliert sich weit
im Märchenreich der eignen Kinderzeit.

Magic in the Noon
In the garden the silence of high noon reigns over,
the lawn sparkles, the treetops shadow wide;
from above, bathed in sunshine
and bright blue, looks the old dome in.

On the pear tree sits my little daughter in the grass;
she reads the fairy tale that as a child I read;
her face glows, it wafts through her mind
Snow White, Tom Thumb, Serpent Queen.

No sound disturbs from the outside; it's holiday -
only now and then from the tower a chime!
Only now and then the dull sound
in the tall grass of an apple's fall!

Suddenly a wonderful dawn comes on me,
just as in a dream merges, what is and was:
the soul dissolves and loses itself far
in the fairy tale realm of the own child time.
