Left for dead (House of Usher) - a photo on Flickriver

"I know not how it was - but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable ; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls - upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees - with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium - the bitter lapse into everyday life - the hideous dropping off of the veil. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart - an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it - I paused to think - what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? "

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Fall of the House of Usher", I re-worked an original piece (thanks to Lenabem-Anna for this texture) titled "Left for Dead", a photograph of a mid-to-late 1800's abandoned farm house in Linden, VA in the midst of its decay. The newly formed piece takes Poe's vision of the House of Usher and the utterly tattered scene in Virginia and merges the two in a macabre embrace. This is a first for me in reworking a photograph in such a manner. I wanted to take an existing body of work and mold it into what my minds eye saw when I read this story. Poe's work always takes hold of my imagination, going back to the days when I first read "A Tell Tale Heart"- the visceral images my mind conjured up through his words inspired my own writing years later and that inspiration still takes its place in my writing style, as well as my photography, to this day.

This original, first and one-of-a-kind, Artist Edition 1/1 numbered piece will be available for viewing and purchase exclusively at The Front Street Gallery in downtown Poulsbo, WA during the month of October. The photograph will be shown, along with other member artists works, for the gallery's "Poe-to-ber" display tribute- artists works inspired by the American great poet and story teller.
