Lanterns Floating in the Dusk... - a photo on Flickriver

            ...guiding loved ones back to the spirit world

Each year, toward the end of August, the o-Bon festival is held over three days in Japan. It is believed that the departed come back for a brief time during this period. At then end o-Bon, thousands of floating lanterns are released to slowly float away to the sea, and help the ancestors return to the spirit world. 

This is known as the Toro Nagashi ceremony, and is not only very widely observed in Japan, but now in places around the world. The lanterns may carry inscriptions commemorating the souls of the dead, pictures, or with wishes for the future.

The Morton Arboretum, as part of their Asian Fest, holds a Toro Nagashi. I hope this conveys some of the mystery of that evening, fading into night, showing some of the lanterns inscribing their own calligraphy as they drift across the water.
