Eurasian Wren, winterkoning - a photo on Flickriver

            The wren is a small bird that is mainly characterized by the upright posture of the tail. The plumage is brown and with numerous dark transverse stripes. The song of the wren is a series of blaring sounds with a vibrator and a high tone at the end. The vocals are very loud and heard throughout the year. The bird is usually low in the bushes or under other shelter and is almost constantly in motion. The flight is remarkably fast, the wings produce a whirring sound. 

The male is more, almost entirely closed nests, of which the female chooses one of them to coat with feathers and other soft material. Those on the inside Because the wren is very small, the bird loses a lot of heat in winter. In cold winter nights kings groups huddle together to keep warm. However, in severe winters to 75% of winter kings die, so the number of winter kings can vary each year. 

De winterkoning is een klein vogel die vooral wordt gekenmerkt door de rechtopstaande houding van de staart. Het verenkleed is roodbruin en voorzien van talrijke donkere dwarsstreepjes. De zang van de winterkoning bestaat uit een reeks schetterende klanken met een triller en een hoge toon op het eind. De zang is erg luid en het gehele jaar te horen. De vogel bevindt zich meestal laag in het struikgewas of onder andere beschutting en is vrijwel voortdurend in beweging. De vlucht is opvallend snel, waarbij de vleugels een snorrend geluid veroorzaken.

Het mannetje maakt meerdere, vrijwel geheel gesloten nesten, waarvan het vrouwtje er ééntje kiest om deze aan de binnenkant te bekleden met veertjes en ander zacht materiaal. Doordat de winterkoning erg klein is, verliest de vogel in de winter veel warmte. In koude nachten kruipen groepen winterkoningen dicht tegen elkaar om warm te blijven. Toch kan in strenge winters wel 75% van de winterkoningen sterven, zodat het aantal winterkoningen per jaar sterk kan variëren.
