Malnutrition measures - a photo on Flickriver

Two-year-old Moctar is weighed in a sling scale while a health worker measures his mid-upper arm circumference, at a UNICEF-supported health centre in a village in the Maradi Region of Niger. The red on the armband indicates that Moctar is severely malnourished.

After initial screening at local health centres, children suffering from severe acute malnutrition are referred to hospitals, where therapeutic feeding centres provide them with intensive nutritional care and treatment.

The UK Government is supporting UNICEF to provide urgently needed therapeutic food to help save the lives of over 100,000 severely malnourished children like Moctar across Niger, Chad and Mali.

Background

World Humanitarian Day is a chance to celebrate and acknowledge the work of aid workers across the world, often risking their lives for the sake of others. Although World Humanitarian Day lasts for only 24 hours, the work of aid workers responding to natural disasters and food crises does not.
