The Great Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. Crane I [Venice - 19 November 2011]

            This is probably the last survivor of nine great hydraulic cranes made by the north of England firm, Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It was commissioned in 1883 by the Italian Navy as a part of a plan to enlarge and modernize the Venice Arsenale.
The heavy-lift hydraulic cranes produced by Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. between 1877 and 1905 are one of the highpoints of 19th-century technological achievement in the field of hoisting machinery. They were developed as a by-product of contemporary naval shipbuilding, in particular the need to lift warships cannon weighing over 100 tons each. The firs of these cranes was installed in La Spezia in 1876, and the others in Bombay (1877), Liverpool (1881), Malta (1883), Taranto (1885), Pozzuoli (1887), and two in Japan (1892 and 1905).
With changes in shipbuilding technology, the introduction of electrically powered cranes and low interest in industrial archaeology, there great pieces of engineering have been dismantled, one by one. The last to go, in 1992, was in La Spezia, leaving only the Venice crane as witness to the engineering skill of our ancestors. For this reason, for this unique setting and for its particular constructional quality, it is an invaluable part of our cultural heritage.
