Holy Innocents, Lamarsh (1) - a photo on Flickriver

            The tiny Essex village of Lamarsh (derived from the Saxon "Lamers" or "loam land") lies on the south bank of the River Stour between Sudbury and Bures. It is mentioned several times in the Domesday Book, when its population was 150. At the last census in 2001, it stood at 158.

The Church of the Holy Innocents dates from 1140 and is one of only six round-towered churches in Essex. The tower wall thickness of 2ft 10in. (864mm) is the thinnest of all East Anglian round-towers. The 20ft (6.9m) spire is a typically Essex octagonal construction and dates from 1865, after a restoration by the distinguished architect Sir Arthur Blomfield, also responsible for the restoration of Norwich Cathedral. It probably replaced an earlier spire. The Tudor-brick south porch dates from the reign of Elizabeth I. The Stour Valley Railway line runs just by the eastern edge of the churchyard.
