St. Mary The Virgin, Great Bircham, West Window

            The great West Window at St. Mary the Virgin, Great Bircham dates from the 15th century with its Perpendicular tracery. It has a crenellated transome and hood mould with semi figures holding shields of the Clare and De Burgh families.

It was re-glazed in 1883 in a typical Victorian style, incorporating 6 Biblical texts on scrolls. Stylistic flowers, vines, grapes and lilies fill the tracery lights. The key stone at the top has the head of a man with a bushy moustache looking down.

The plaque beneath reads - "To the Glory of God and in memory of George Richard Hammond, generous benefactor to this church, who died Nov 4th 1885. Blessed are the Dead which die in the Lord."
