Crackington Haven Long Exposure Dawn

Another shot from the Camera Club Cornwall Seascapes Photographic workshop. This shot was taken at the small bay of Crackington Haven about 12 miles south of Bude in Cornwall. Although the sun rose behind us inland we got lucky with some colours in the clouds out to sea. It took a little clambering to get on the rock strata which seems common in this area and provides a nice lead-in. The wind was relatively light compared to what it had been allowing for a steady tripod and a 30 second exposure. I used a 10 stop BW screw on filter. I have found that as a rough guide rather than using exposure calculators if I get the exposure to 1/30 second before fitting the filter the correct exposure after the filter will be between 30 seconds and a minute depending on the scene, RAW editing can correct any exposure problems

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 11mm. Taken with a tripod using a BW 10 stop filter. The picture was first processed in RAW using Capture One a Pro RAW editor with a free version available to Sony users (£250 to everyone else). More overall detail was brought in using Topaz Clarity including a little more saturation. Topaz Denoise was used for noise especially in the sky using a mask, A brightness adjustment layer was used with a mask to brighten the sea.
