The Summit of Pedra da Gávea ('the Topsail Stone') at 840 m (2,756 ft) MSL, Rio de Janeiro Brasil.

            There are several theories about why the city of Rio de Janeiro is called the Marvelous City. Among all the explanations, the one that seems the most plausible and real is a record in the Rio newspaper “O Paiz” in February 1904, during the Rio carnival. After that, many journalists, poets and writers started to use the term to refer to the city of Rio.

In 1935 the term was used in the creation of the carnival march “Cidade Maravilhosa”, which became Rio’s anthem years later, and was immortalized in the voices of important Brazilian interpreters, such as Caetano Veloso. Who doesn't know the famous refrain, “cidade maravilhosa, cheia de encantos mil, cidade maravilhosa, coração do meu Brasil” (in Eglish: “wonderful city, full of thousand charms, wonderful city, heart of my Brazil”), isn't it?!

And the composer Andre Filho was right when he wrote that Rio is a city “cheia de encantos mil” (“full of thousand charms”).
