Acorn Woodpecker 4786 - a photo on Flickriver

            One of my favorite birds. My home is less than two miles from 3,000 or more acres of Open Space oak woodlands, the home of the Acorn Woodpecker. Within MY walking range, there are four family groups which rarely stray from their favorite granaries, the dead branches, posts, and trees where they store their acorns. Two of the trees I've visited over the years have had their largest branches collapse from the weight of the acorns that have been pounded into them. The acorns are pounded into holes drilled by the birds, and they're so tightly inserted that even squirrels and jays can't get them out. For the most part, jays just sit in other trees waiting for the woodpeckers to drop one. 

Unfortunately, we're not getting the acorn crop that we would in wet years, and Acorn Woodpeckers seem to be spreading out in search of oaks that are producing.
