Rebecca McClung White of Jasper recalls visiting her grandparents in Box Spring as a child. She remembers their arbor filled with scuppernongs. "We called them scupnins and were shocked the first time we saw the word spelled out on a sign, " said White, a teacher. With the juice, her grandmother, Willa Sinclair, made jelly and wine "that was just awful," White says. But the pie she made from the hulls, she said, "was a treat."
