Chalk Outline

            I'm often amazed how photos taken at the same basic place and time can yields such different stylistic results. Sometimes I capture scenes that convey a sense of serenity and beauty, even amid the remains of an abandoned structure or burial ground. Other times the results are stark and harsh. Scene like this put me in mind of crime scene photos from the era of the public enemy in the 1920s and '30s. These journalistic photos were intended to depict the scenes of crimes and were generally matter of fact and absent any attempt at artistic expression. However that in itself becomes a sort of photographic style. The point was to show where an event occurred, and that might mean cropping out unnecessary details and focusing in on a part of the scene that would make no sense absent the backstory of a crime scene. I also love the gritty BW look of the old photos. I must be subconsciously channeling that sort of expression because I always seem to return home with at least a few shots like this. It's not always subconsciously either. Standing here it was easy to imagine how this old house being used as a hideout back the day. Perhaps the scene of a shootout with the likes of Ma Barker or Dillinger. Thoughts like that just add to the color and I suppose romance of an abandonment. I've often pondered the attraction to places like this. Part of it is curiosity about the past lives of occupants. But certainly the foreboding quality also plays a role. Every time I see an open doorway like this I am intrigued. Part of me thinking "hey, I can enter without breaking in" and another part thinking, "hey, so could someone else, and perhaps they are still here."
