Shooting at Alabama Hills on this day. The list of movies shot at Alabama Hills easily reaches over 150, most of them shot before I was born. It is a fascinating place filled with muddy colors & boulders, and if you look hard enough, you can find these very photogenic barrel cactuses like the one featured here.

I had started the morning at Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, and the plan was to drive to Alabama Hills after sunrise to explore. I only had an idea of what I wanted to shoot based on my research of the area. I was thrown for a loop when I arrived.

Meanwhile, in Death Valley, over the last several days I had been looking for mud tiles to photograph. They create beautifully textured tiles of earth from the washes of floods. It wasn't until the last day, through a group that I had met, that I would find the tiles. I ended up waiting around, mulling on the decision to leave Death Valley for Alabama Hills or stay one more night meaning I would miss some of my scheduled plans in other regions.

I decided to move on, and by the time I arrived at my location, it was about an hour until sunset. Sometimes that isn't a big deal, but the plan was to arrive with 3+ hours to find camp, setup and explore to find a composition I preferred. This place immediately gave me a headache, and I knew it was going to take a miracle to find a diamond in what I considered a lot of rough.

I drove around for about 45 minutes and didn't encounter much that moved me. My spirits were down, and I felt hopeless. Because it is tough to locate a subject and frame it while it is dark outside, I always like to find my subject or area the day before sunrise. I felt like I would have nothing for the next morning if I didn't see it quick.

I found where I could camp and after a quick hike around, found this barrel cactus and a broad open view of Mt Whitney and other peaks of the Eastern Sierra's. I loved the little clouds overhead and how they mocked the cactus in the foreground, so I took a few shots and moved on to where I THOUGHT I would want to take star shots later, that's a whole different story!

It's not my favorite picture from the trip by any means, but I find it somewhat interesting of a composition!
