Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus elegans)

Oxbow Nature Refuge, Reno, Washoe Co, Nevada (November 21st, 2016). 21. Small city park along the Truckee River.

Pair, perched together on a snag not that far from last year's nest..Note the (expected) size difference, with the presumed male noticeably smaller than the presumed female. Also the (not particularly expected) color difference between the two, with the female darker & more richly colored than her mate.

Red-shouldered Hawks are uncommon at any season in Reno with no breeding records until 2011. All the ones that I've seen belonged to the highly colored California subspecies (B. l. elegans)
