Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) - a photo on Flickriver

Diamond Pond, Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada (December 27th, 2016). 41. Large urban pond.

Immature, feeding on a three-quarters eaten coot on the lawn at the W end of the pond a few feet back from the water's edge. Closeup of the head and gore-encrusted bill. Extremely tame and doubtless the same individual I photographed feeding on a coot on the W side of the pond in November. A herd of over a hundred coots has been feeding on the lawns the last few months, and apparently provides easy pickings for a young hawk still learning its difficult trade.
