Great War Hospital Entrance, Brindley Village, Cannock Chase 29/06/2014

            This easily overlooked concrete stump marks the position of the entrance to the site of the former Great War hospital on Cannock Chase.

Completed in 1916, the hospital served both the military training camp on Cannock Chase, and the armed forces in general. It had one thousand beds arranged in twelve wards to accommodate both injured trainees and the wounded being returned from the Western Front.

Following the war the hospital continued in operation, treating those suffering due to poisonous gas and shell shock. The hospital had it's own on-site church and electricity generating equipment.

Closure came in November 1924, but local miners continued to live at the facility for many years afterwards causing it to become known as Brindley Village. The site was finally levelled during the 1950s, and little remains other than this pillar base in order to mark it's existence.
