Saint George Slaying the Dragon, Prague, Czech Republic

A Gothic statue of svatého Jiří (St George) at Katedrála svatého Víta, Václava a Vojtěcha (St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral), at the Hradčany castle in Praha, Česká Republika.

This statue is actually a copy of the original, which was removed to the National Gallery. The original statue was cast in 1373 by the iron founders Jiří and Martin from Kluž and is considered probably the oldest surviving, free-standing statue in Bohemia. Freestanding statues are atypical of the Gothic era where most statues were part of and connected to the architecture.

While the original site of the statue is not known, the statue has held its current location since the early 20th century when the castle was adapted for governmental use as a presidential residence at the start of the Czech Republic by Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik.

The statue is located just south of the chapter house and just east of a monolithic Mrakotín granite obelisk.
