Boat-billed Heron (Juvenilles), Savacou Huppé, Martinete Cucharón, Cochlearius Cochlearius

            "Usually goes unnoticed by their nocturnal habits. At night it is solitary. By day it roosts in groups of up to 50 individuals, in trees overhanging water. Solitary individuals forage at night in water´s edge, gravel bars, shallow ponds and mud sites. They detect their prey by sight or perhaps touch. It is believed that the bill have touch sensitivity that helps capture prey. They seek their food removing the substrate with the bill. Superficially resembling night-herons in the genus Nycticorax, the Boat-billed Heron differs in its extremely wide, flat bill whose maxilla looks like the upturned keel of a boat, giving this species its common name.  A crepuscular species, it uses its unique bill to hunt amphibians, small fish, crustaceans, insects, and small vertebrates, while wading through shallow water.  Unlike other species of herons, the Boat-billed Heron is very aggressive when defending its nest and young against potential predators, scaring away other species of birds, and vocalizing loudly, even lunging, at approaching humans.
