N103WA World Airways McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF lifting off at Frankfurt airport

The DC-10 was the widebody that I most liked to watch and photograph. The aircraft design was particularly suited to a number of airline liveries, Thai International being one of my all time favourites.

N103WA McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF of World Airways is seen here gleaming in the sunshine at Frankfurt, on a very steep take off with flight WO103 (probably a positioning flight so empty).

N103WA c/n 46975 - McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF was delivered new to World Airways in March 1978. The aircraft was the first of many DC-10s for the airline, and flew with World until 1986. The aircraft was then sold to United Airlines as N1856U. After withdrawal in 2001, the aircraft ended up stored at Marana, Arizona where the aircraft still remained stored in 2013.

World Airways was one of USA's oldest charter airlines, originally based at Oakland California. Operations commenced in 1948, with overseas charter flights starting in 1963. Gatwick saw Boeing 707s, Boeing 747s and stretched DC-8s before the first DC-10s started arriving in 1978, gradually taking over all there airlines transatlantic flights for the next decade or so. On the 27th of March 2014, just two days short of 66 years in operation, World Airways ceased operations.
