N112WA World Airways McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF taxies for a runway 26 take off at London Gatwick

The DC-10 was the widebody that I most liked to watch and photograph. The aircraft design was particularly suited to a number of airline liveries, Thai International being one of my all time favourites.

N112WA McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF of World Airways is seen here taxiing at Gatwick for a runway 26 take off with flight WO21. The aircraft had only been with the airline for a month when the photo was taken. Not the rarest of Gatwick visitors, but 30+ years later they're all starting to look good! One of the Laker 'Skytrain' DC-10s can be seen over in the maintenance area.

N112WA c/n 47820 - McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF was delivered new to World Airways in May 1980. The aircraft was one of many DC-10s for the airline, and flew with World until 1994, although leased out a few times during this period. Converted to an all freighter, the aircraft has flown with Federal Express since 1994 as N319FE, being converted to an MD-10 in 2009.

World Airways was one of USA's oldest charter airlines, originally based at Oakland California. Operations commenced in 1948, with overseas charter flights starting in 1963. Gatwick saw Boeing 707s, Boeing 747s and stretched DC-8s before the first DC-10s started arriving in 1978, gradually taking over all there airlines transatlantic flights for the next decade or so. On the 27th of March 2014, just two days short of 66 years in operation, World Airways ceased operations.
