Robber Fly ( Family Asilidae ) - a photo on Flickriver

            食蟲虻又稱盜虻，雙翅目短角亞目，分布於世界各地，大約有7100種。所有的食蟲虻都有粗壯，長著刺的腿，臉部有濃密的鬍子狀的鬃毛，兩隻大的複眼中間有3個單眼。鬃毛在遇到獵物時保護頭部和臉部。觸角短，分成3段，有些有豬鬃狀的芒。

其喙短且強，用來刺破獵物並注入含有毒性和蛋白水解酶唾液，使獵物內部麻痹，通過長嘴吮吸液體。許多物種腹部長，逐漸變細，另一些腹部扁平。成年食蟲虻攻擊其他蒼蠅、甲蟲、蝴蝶、飛蛾、各種蜜蜂、螞蟻、豆娘、黃蜂、蝗蟲、一些蜘蛛。
