Milky Way over a lush spring Badlands.....
One of the main reasons for going to the South Dakota Badlands in May was to capture the milky way rising over this particular area. As the spring and summer move on, so does the position of the milky way. The good part is being able to include the lush green grass from the spring rains....the not so good part is having to be up almost all night to capture the milky way rising at 2:00am and beyond. Since the area is too vast to light up with artificial lights, I had to capture the foreground just after sundown. Then, it was a 6 hour wait for the milky way to rise into the position I wanted. This is a time blend and focal blend of 2 images. Nikon Z9 with Nikkor 24-70 F2.8 S lens for the foreground, and Nikkor 14-24F2.8 for the sky. Nothing is moved in between shots except for the lens being changed.
Foreground: F11, 1/13sec, ISO 64, 42mm
Sky: F2.8, 10 sec, ISO 10,000, 20mm, 15 images stacked for noise reduction.
Hand blended and edited in Lightroom and Photoshop. May 2023
