Empire Day Celebrations in Sydney, N.S.W. - 1909

"In Sydney a great demonstration was held at Martin Place. Between 8000 and 10,000 persons assembled on the cricket ground, where the public schools made a display. About
250,000 persons attended a review. A body of 2400 cadets saluted the colours. There was also a grand tableau-" Empire Day-one flag one fleet"-by 7000 children. In the centre of the
middle display the Union Jack was formed of ranks of children dressed in red, white, and blue. On each side were representations of anchors. At the top were a few hundred lads grouped to spell the words " One flag" and at the bottom was another set arranged to spell "One fleet." The whole tableau was held within a huge hexagon made of cadets.
Patriotic songs were sung by 7000 voices. Lady Poore, wife of Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Poore, Commander-in-Chief of the British fleet on the Australian station, unfurled Lord Roberts'
family flag. After this came flag drill by 6500 children, and various physical culture exercises wound up the programme."

The photographer James Francis Hurley (1885–1962) was born in Sydney and educated at Glebe Public School. At the age of 13 he ran away from school and worked in a steel mill at Lithgow. In 1900 he returned to Sydney. He became interested in photography and in 1905 joined Harry Cave in a postcard business. He quickly established a reputation for the high technical quality of his work and for his willingness to take risks in order to obtain spectacular images. He held his first exhibition in 1910.
