Return of the Flying Scotsman - a photo on Flickriver

It's taken 10 years and more than £4m but one of the world's most famous locomotives has been restored to return to service. Rail enthusiasts gathered in Lancashire to see newly-restored "Colossus" return to the East Lancs Railway.

On Saturday 9th January 2016 she bore the engine number 60103 – the last she ever wore during her remarkable career and the first she is carrying back on to the tracks. Saturday marked only Scotsman’s first tentative miles but none the less several thousand people lined the route between Bury and Rawtenstall to watch her pass.

Speed restrictions on the line meant Flying Scotsman trundled past the birch forests and old mill chimneys of the Irwell Valley at a steady 25mph but even that required half a tonne of coal to be shovelled in.
