The Forth Bridge

In 1878 construction work began on a suspension bridge, designed by Thomas Bouch, to carry a railway line across the River Forth. However when Bouch’s original Tay Bridge collapsed during a storm in December 1879, work on his bridge across the Forth stopped immediately and a new design was sought. In 1883 work began on a cantilever bridge, designed by John Fowler and Benjamin Baker. Baker and Fowler’s bridge was the first major construction in Britain to be made from steel; the bridge incorporates 53,000 tonnes of the material. The lighthouse in this picture sit on a brick pier on the rocks of Inchgarvie. This pier is the only part of the Bouch designed bridge that was built.
