From the greenhouse Kelly made her way to the market district.
For decades, the population relied solely on the outpost cafeteria for sustenance. Eventually people grew tired of the clinical, factory-like process; the mass-produced meals served like clockwork; the sanitized bench tables and dull oppressive mess halls.
Some of the more entrepreneurial among the population decided it was time for a change, or at the very least, some variety.
It started with independent diners and eateries popping up here and there. Over time, it gradually blossomed into a full network of retail businesses. Eventually it got to the point where dedicated space had to be partitioned off for the operation.
The outpost governments not only encouraged it; they subsidized it. ‘Incentivized free market’ was the term commonly thrown around. It helped kickstart the local economy and encourage supplementary employment and productivity, while at the same time bringing back a sense of normality. Like how life had once been before The Choke.
The market consisted of a long corridor, with a wide assortment of small vendor stalls and shops lining the sides. It resembled the bazaars or malls of the old days. Some were full-fledged corner stores, while others were just hawkers with merchandise displayed on tables or blankets. If it could be bought or sold, there was probably a vendor dedicated to it…and a competitor trying to one-up them.
An antique shop here, a clothing store there, a salon down the hall, with a tattoo and piercing parlor right next door. A home décor if you wanted to spruce up your living space, a used electronics provider if that was your thing (a favorite among the proxy operatives). A library, a photo studio, a theater; all micro-scaled, but still appreciated by many. And plenty of bars and diners.
Just to name a few.
Kelly was more than familiar with a few of the store owners, as she regularly supplied them with scavenged goods from the outside world. Sally Anne’s thrift boutique and Martin the antiques dealer had become her two best repeat clients, though she tried not to pick favorites.
String lighting and lanterns zig-zagged along the ceiling. Relevant signage and advertisements decorated the outsides of shops, whether it be modern holographic projections, scavenged old world advertisements, repurposed neon or LED fixtures, or simple hand painted placards. It all came together to give the market a cozy consumerist atmosphere.
The mobile food carts were just at the tail-end of the breakfast rush, and the smell of coffee and baked goods still lingered in the air. Waffles, biscuits, breakfast wraps, hand pies, mostly catering towards the on-the-go eaters.
Kelly snaked her way through the bustling crowds. Scanning over the store fronts, she ended up settling on stopping by the Cupboard Café. Not a hard choice though, it was her favorite place to eat after all.
