These days smoking ceremonies are often included as part of the Welcome to Country to cleanse people and environment before a major event begins. The event in this case is the Yabun Festival held annually on 26 January to celebrate the survival of Australia’s Indigenous cultures. Uncle Max moves around the crowd surrounded by NITV cameramen. Smoking ceremonies are associated with healing and purifying by warding off bad spirits. In more traditional settings they might be performed after childbirth, a death or circumcision.
