MONASTERIO DE LAS HUELGAS - Burgos - a photo on Flickriver

            Parte delantera de los sarcófagos que contienen los restos del rey Alfonso VIII de Castilla, abuelo de Fernando III el Santo, y de su esposa Leonor de Inglaterra, hermana de Ricardo Corazón de León y de Juan sin Sierra. 
Estos sepulcros se realizaron durante el siglo XIII.

Sobresale desde el punto de vista ornamental, la singularidad de la superficie de sus caras, articuladas por medio de arquerías bajo las que, en el del rey, por primera vez, aparece el castillo, propio de su condición de soberano de Castilla, reforzándose con ello la identidad del rey-reino al significarse el monarca por el símbolo del país; en el de la reina, se representan los 3 leopardos coronados propios de los Plantagenet, que transformados en leones, formaron el escudo de Inglaterra.
En el frontispicio del arca del rey, se ha representado la Cruz, portada por dos ángeles, seguramente haciendo alusión a la que se llevó en la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa. En el arca de la reina, se representa su alma elevada por dos ángeles.

Ambos cónyuges fallecieron en el mes de octubre de 1214, después de haber vivido casi toda su vida juntos, ya que se casaron cuando tenían 14 y 10 años, respectivamente.
La influencia política y cultural de la reina fue notable.

Consta que la pareja tuvo al menos diez hijos, entre ellos su sucesor Enrique I, y la sucesora de éste, la reina Doña Berenguela, madre de Fernando III el Santo, en quien abdicó al hacerse cargo de la corona. Posteriormente, Fernando III heredó el reino de León al morir su padre Alfonso IX, produciéndose la tercera y definitiva unión de esos dos reinos.​

These tombs were made during the 13th century.

From the ornamental point of view, the uniqueness of the surface of its faces stands out, articulated by means of arches under which, in the king's, for the first time, the castle appears, typical of his condition as sovereign of Castile, reinforcing the identity of the king-kingdom as the monarch is signified by the symbol of the country; In that of the queen, the 3 crowned leopards typical of the Plantagenet are represented. Those ones transformed into lions, form the shield of England.
On the frontispiece of the king's ark, the Cross has been represented, carried by two angels, surely alluding to the one ported in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. In the queen's ark, her soul is represented elevated by two angels.

Both spouses died in October 1214, after having lived almost their entire lives together, since they married when being 14 and 10 years old, respectively.
The political and cultural influence of the queen was notable.

It is known that the couple had at least ten children, among them his successor Enrique I, and the successor of him, Queen Doña Berenguela, mother of Ferdinand III the Saint, in which she abdicated when taking over the crown. Subsequently, Fernando III inherited the kingdom of León when his father Alfonso IX died, producing the third and definitive union of those two kingdoms.
