Watching the meadow work like a hawk!

First steps towards a significant and thoughtful rehabilitation of the Jay landscape have been discussed for almost twenty years and are now visibly taking shape!

Following numerous presentations to stakeholders, Larry Weaner and his design team are now executing the proposal they prepared specifically for the Jay site - with a goal of increasing biodiversity and providing greater access to open space and cultural heritage for the community, they will reverse an unhealthy monoculture behind the mansion and create an inviting meadow habitat for birds, insects and smaller mammals.

Identifying what he has called a "Confluence of Centuries," Larry Weaner's design will also preserve the imprints of many natural and human inhabitants from the Indigenous era through an estate period that included slave ownership up to contemporary usage. Etched memorial stones telling these stories will be laid in a mown path through the meadow

Donations for the meadow continue to come in slowly but surely; as of November, these funds have allowed us to cut, rake and dispose of two acres of invasive mugwort. Reseeding the area with native grasses and wildflowers is the next step! Specimens that have been selected for us including Nodding Pink Onion and Purple Lovegrass.

Lastly, two dead beech trees have been removed and will be replaced with healthy new saplings in the spring together with a new elm tree pledged by the Rye Garden Club through the Garden Club of America!
