Stormy Afternoon in Yosemite Valley - a photo on Flickriver

            Our fourth full day in Yosemite was full of surprises. it started with mist swirling around granite walls of the Valley at sunrise. Then we enjoyed fog on the way to breakfast. We caught a rainbow in Upper Yosemite Falls, and some of the fall colors in the Valley were spectacularly side-lit. In a place where we get an uncommon reflection of Half Dome, Lori Hibbett directed members to some tree reflection abstracts that she like in the Merced River. We had an appointment with a waterfall that was selectively lit by the sun in the middle, but not the top and bottom.

As rain showers enveloped the eastern end of the Valley, the sunlight was still beaming in from the west, so we headed up to Tunnel View to see the spectacle. The clouds were quite literally dumping, with streaks of rain streaming down. After a short while, the sunlight caught the rain, and a rainbow was formed! In a wider composition, as great as the rainbow was, it wasn't the star of the show, and black and white processing helped keep the rainbow from being a distraction in the broader scene.
