Der Pico del Teide [ˈpiko ðel ˈtejðe], manchmal auch Teyde, ist mit 3715 m[1] die höchste Erhebung auf Teneriffa (Kanarische Inseln) und der höchste Berg auf spanischem Staatsgebiet. Der mit 7500 m Höhe über dem Meeresboden dritthöchste Inselvulkan der Erde gehört zum Gemeindegebiet von La Orotava. 18.990 Hektar der Bergregion sind als Nationalpark ausgewiesen. 2018 wurde der Park von 4,8 Millionen Personen besucht.[2] 2007 wurde das Gebiet des Parks von der UNESCO in die Liste des Weltnaturerbes aufgenommen.

Geologie
Der Pico del Teide ist ein Schichtvulkan. Seine Hänge sind kaum bewachsen. Er erhebt sich aus einer riesigen Caldera mit 17 Kilometer Durchmesser namens Las Cañadas. Nach früheren Vorstellungen entstand sie vor 170.000 Jahren aus einem älteren Vulkan, dessen entleerte Magmakammer in sich zusammenbrach. Heute wird jedoch angenommen, dass der südliche Rand der „Caldera“ das „Amphitheater“ einer Trümmerlawine ist, die nach Norden ins Meer rutschte. Die Geologen vermuten, dass das unterseeische Plateau im Norden Teneriffas das Material dieses gigantischen Abrutsches ist.[4]

Der Teide selbst ist nicht in einem Schritt entstanden. Der Komplex Teide-Pico Viejo ist ein Schichtvulkan, der sich durch die Anhäufung von Material aufeinanderfolgender Eruptionen bildete. Der 200 Meter hohe Teidegipfel El Pitón entstand ebenfalls aus einem älteren Krater.

Der letzte Ausbruch am Teide-Massiv fand am 18. November 1909 am Chinyero, einem Schlackenkegel 10 km nordwestlich des Gipfels statt. Der letzte Ausbruch innerhalb der Caldera ereignete sich im Jahre 1798 an den Narices del Teide, die an der Flanke des westlichen Nachbarvulkans Pico Viejo (3134 m) liegen. Der einzige überlieferte explosive Ausbruch erfolgte um 50 v. Chr. an der Montaña Blanca an der Ostflanke des Teide, als aus einer 15 km hohen Eruptionssäule etwa 0,25 km³ DRE Bimsstein und Asche niedergingen.

If measured from the ocean floor, it is at 7,500 m (24,600 ft) the fourth-highest volcano in the world,[b] and is described by UNESCO and NASA as Earth's third-tallest volcanic structure.[5][6][c] Teide's elevation makes Tenerife the tenth highest island in the world. Teide is an active volcano: its most recent eruption occurred in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift. The United Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation designated Teide a Decade Volcano[7] because of its history of destructive eruptions and its proximity to several large towns, of which the closest are Garachico, Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la Cruz. Teide, Pico Viejo and Montaña Blanca form the Central Volcanic Complex of Tenerife.

The volcano and its surroundings comprise Teide National Park, which has an area of 18,900 hectares (47,000 acres) and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 28, 2007.[5] Teide is the most visited natural wonder of Spain, the most visited national park in Spain and Europe and – by 2015 – the eighth most visited in the world,[8] with some 3 million visitors yearly.[9] In 2016, it was visited by 4,079,823 visitors and tourists, reaching a historical record.[10][11] Teide Observatory, a major international astronomical observatory, is located on the slopes of the mountain.
