DSCN2995 woodman's follower - a photo on Flickriver

The Heath Fritillary in the Notecka Forest near Marianowo (Melitaea athalia - a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae, Przeplatka atalia in Polish). It is found in heathland, grassland, and coppiced woodland in sunny, warm, and sheltered habitats. The primary foodplants are Common Cow-wheat (Melampyrum pratense), Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata), and Germander Speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys). The nickname 'Woodman's Follower' is linked with the cycle of cutting around a wood (practice of woodland coppicing). The Notecka Forest provides a home to the rare heath fritillary.
