J20170615-0018—Berberis nervosa—RPBG—DxO

            Berberis nervosa—Cascades oregon grape.  James Roof, the first Director of Regional Parks Botanic Garden, described this specimen as Berberis nervosa var. mendociensis in Vol 3 (1969) No. 1 issue of The Four Seasons. "These 'giant' plants," Roof wrote,  "are like no others of the species yet brought in from the wild.  Their massive stem-systems, very rough bark, huge green leaves, abundant yellow flowers and large blue berries mark these shrubs as the noblest of their kind."  Alas, less poetic minds nowadays consider the plants as no more than a minor variation of the species and Jepson eFlora has merged Roof's variety back into the species.  The berries have just started to turn blue from green.  Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
