Keukenhof is gevestigd op een gedeelte van het landgoed van Kasteel Keukenhof. Het Landgoed Keukenhof is ontstaan in 1642 toen er een hoekige hofstede 'Keukenhof' werd gebouwd in het keukenduin van slot Teylingen. Het keukenduin ontleent zijn naam aan het feit dat de opbrengsten van het duingebied zoals wild, vee en allerlei kruiden en bessen bestemd waren voor de huishouding ofwel keuken van het slot Teijlingen.

Latere bewoners hebben de hofstede Keukenhof verbouwd tot het huidige met torens verfraaide Kasteel Keukenhof. In 1840 werd het park heringericht door de tuinarchitecten Zocher en Zn., die later ook het Vondelpark in Amsterdam ontwierpen.

In 1949 werd het noordelijke deel van het landgoed tot bloemententoonstelling ingericht, op initiatief van de toenmalige burgemeester van Lisse, W.J.H. Lambooy en een tiental vooraanstaande bloembollenkwekers. De opening vond plaats in 1950. Inmiddels doen 91 zogenaamde hofleveranciers ieder jaar mee met de tentoonstelling.

Sinds 1957 staat op het terrein de Keukenhofmolen.

Sinds de laatste kasteelheer van het Landgoed Keukenhof, graaf J.C.E. van Lynden, in augustus 2003 is overleden, heeft de stichting Kasteel Keukenhof van de graaf de verantwoordelijkheid gekregen voor de instandhouding en exploitatie van het landgoed dat bestaat uit meer dan 230 hectare grond waarop 18 rijksmonumenten staan.
