2017 / 2024 eclipse comparison

The 2024 photo is the same shot I posted on its own here: www.flickr.com/photos/joshmt/53647349237 but uncropped this time and with slightly different post-processing. The 2017 photo has not been posted before.

I chose this pair because they were shot with the exact same exposure (ISO 800, f/6.3, 1/200 sec). It is also the same camera.

Coincidentally, both were taken about 40 seconds into totality.

In 2017 I was using a 70-300mm lens at 300mm. Recently I picked up an 80-400mm lens, so the new photo is at 400mm. I had to downscale the new photo to make the sun the same number of pixels diameter as the old photo, and then crop the old photo to make it the same overall size as the new photo.

On my initial attempt, it was obvious that the sun appeared to be a slightly different hue in the 2 photos, so I went in the backyard with a gray card and did a quick test. The new lens appears to be a bit "cooler" than the old one. Also the new lens seems to require +0.2 stops added to the exposure in Lightroom to make the brightness the same. So I compensated for those effects in post-processing to make this final version.
