Two Against Nature - a photo on Flickriver

Two Against Nature

            Ice fishermen on Upper Narrows Pond.  Ice fishermen often haul their gear in plastic sleds, including hand or gas-powered augers to drill holes through the ice.  These two have gone out there on foot, but often, they will travel on snowmobiles, ATVs, or (if the ice is thick enough) even cars and trucks.  

You can just see a line of "tip ups" extending from the fishermen to the left of the frame.  A "tip up" is a simple mechanism with a spool of line leading to a baited hook or lure, and a spring-loaded flag that pops up when a fish is on the line.  

These two were quite jolly, despite a gloomy day.  A close look reveals both a bottle and a thermos near the gentleman seated on the left.  

And so, the title "Two Against Nature" (borrowed from a Steely Dan song) refers both to the two fishermen, and their two forms of liquid warmth.   =)
