Zodiacal light in France - a photo on Flickriver

            FR : Lumière zodiacale au Château de Losse en Dordogne.

Encore le Château de Losse ? Avec un phénomène astronomique rare, autre que l’Airglow ? Oui... Trois semaines après avoir capturé THE airglow au Château de Losse, une photo qui a fait le tour du monde, je suis retourné à Losse avec l'équipe de TF1 pour un tournage. L'objectif, après avoir interviewé des habitants de Montignac et rencontré le propriétaire du château, était de refaire une photo de Losse, dans les "mêmes" conditions que l'Airglow.

L'Airglow étant évidemment très rare, il était presque certain qu'il n'y en aurait pas eu ce soir-là... Même si l'on distingue un Airglow vert clair en particulier sur la gauche de l'image, près de la constellation d'Orion, c'est bien un autre phénomène astronomique que j'ai capturé ce soir-là... Une lumière zodiacale. (oui, j'ai de la chance quand je viens à Losse ahah)...

Avez-vous déjà entendu parler de la lumière zodiacale ? Il s’agit d’une étonnante lueur triangulaire émanant de l’horizon. Sur cette photographie, elle émane juste derrière le château et se prolonge vers la Voie lactée. Mais d’où vient-elle ?.. 

L’hypothèse la plus répandue prétend que la lumière zodiacale s’explique par la réflexion de la lumière du soleil sur des poussières de l’espace (qui proviendraient de Mars)… Cette lumière émane du soleil, et suit le plan elliptique (sur lequel orbitent les planètes et le soleil). Ce plan elliptique change constamment d’inclinaison. Cette lueur est apparue 1h après le sunset!

Je l’ignorais, mais ce phénomène était prévu par les astronomes : « Le mardi 14 février, l’occasion est idéale d’observer la lumière zodiacale vers 21h » sur le site Numérama.

The Château de Losse again? With a rare astronomical phenomenon, other than the airglow? Yes... Three weeks after capturing THE airglow at the Château de Losse, a photo that went around the world, I returned to Losse with the TF1 team for a shoot. The objective, after having interviewed people in Montignac and met the owner of the castle, was to remake a picture of Losse, in the "same" conditions as the Airglow.

Obviously airglow being very rare, it was almost certain that there would not have been any that evening... Even if one distinguishes a light green Airglow in particular on the left of the image, close to the constellation of Orion, it is indeed another astronomical phenomenon which I captured that evening... A zodiacal light. (yes, I am lucky when I come to Losse ahah)...

Have you ever heard of the zodiacal light? It's an amazing triangular glow emanating from the horizon. In this photograph, it emanates just behind the castle and extends towards the Milky Way. But where does it come from? 

The most widespread hypothesis claims that the zodiacal light is explained by the reflection of sunlight on space dust (which would come from Mars)... This light emanates from the sun, and follows the elliptical plane (on which the planets and the sun orbit). This elliptical plane constantly changes its inclination. This glow appeared 1 hour after sunset!

I didn't know it, but this phenomenon was foreseen by astronomers: "On Tuesday 14 February, the opportunity is ideal to observe the zodiacal light around 9pm" on the Numérama website.
