Dogma of the Immaculate Conception - a photo on Flickriver

            ... a closer look at the central fresco by Francis Podesti. All three frescoes in this room commemorate the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX in 1854 

In the upper half, ie. the "in Heaven" section, of the fresco, the Holy Trinity (Son, Father and the Holy Spirit) are with the Virgin Mary. They are surrounded by figures, Prophets and Apostles, from both the Old and New Testaments. 

Saint Peter (holding a key) is the figure in yellow and blue on the far left. I believe the figure in green and red near the center of this image is Saint Paul; he holds what appears to be a sword.

Visible at lower right here are three angels who seem to be driving back the fallen (or is it dogma opponents?) .

The Inscription "Mater Puriss" above the fresco roughly means 'Clean', or Immaculate, Mother. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is the idea that the Virgin Mary was conceived and born without original sin.
