Fallen Tree, Virginia Creeper & Wild Grapes

            While out in the light rain the other day, I walked a short stretch of the Bruce Trail a short distance East of Grimsby, Ontario. This area had a spectacular Fall colour display in the woods mid-way up the Niagara Escarpment and with the coating of rain, the colours really popped. Just beside one section of the trail, a tree had fallen and had been taken over by Virginia Creeper vines, now sporting their red Fall colour, and a tangle of wild grape vines and their yellow leaves. The wet black tree trunk made a nice contrast for the rest of the colours. And, Red Rule applies. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a vintage AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4.0-5.6 lense set to 210mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/16.0, 1/3 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, brighten image overall by setting exposure compensation to EV+0.40, increase lightness, contrast and Chromaticity L-A-B mode, slightly boost black level to darken the tree trunk, set colour temperature by picking a neutral spot on the tree trunk as a reference, very slightly boost Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the tone curve tool to slightly darken the highlight areas, sharpen, save, scale to 6000px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
