Two Birch Trees, Bruce Trail, Thirty Road

            This was taken on short stretch of the Bruce Trail East of Grimsby, Ontario a bit less than a month ago on a rainy Autumn day during peak colour. This area had a spectacular Fall colour display in the woods mid-way up the Niagara Escarpment and with the coating of rain, the colours really popped. Just beside this one section of the trail, a couple of small birch trees still held a few leaves and were starting to be taken over by Virginia Creeper vines, now sporting their red Fall colour. The deliberately out-of-focus background provided a kaleidoscope of Fall colours. Now I realize this goes a bit against conventional wisdom, specifically to keep compositions simple. But the riot of colour just screamed Fall to me.  - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a vintage AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4.0-5.6 lense set to 180mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/8.0, 1/8 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 8000px wide, brighten image overall by setting exposure compensation to EV+0.35, increase contrast and Chromaticity L-A-B mode, use Tone Curve 2 tool in parametric mode to brighten the Lights and Highlights, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to recover highlights (mainly to preserve detail in the birch tree trunks), slightly boost black level to darken the darker areas of the background, set colour temperature to be slightly warmer than as-shot, very slightly reduce Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the tone curve tool to slightly darken the mid-tones, darken the highlights a bit to make sure the birch tree trunks retained detail, reduce the slight residual overall green colour cast by shifting the colour balance slightly to magenta, sharpen, save, scale to 6000px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
